Why I started with VIPkid and How I found some Magic
The two questions I hear the most about VIPkid:
"How early do you have to get up?"
"Why did you want to start doing that?"
The answer to the first question is, "Not that early." The answer to the second question is a bit more complicated because truthfully, I don't know.
Why did I start? Did I need more to do? Did I need less sleep? I had a six month old baby who wasn't sleeping through the night yet, why would I want to get up any earlier to go teach? I have no idea.
I don't know what prompted me to do it. Someone in a homeschool Facebook group had said they did it on the side and that it was "fun." I asked her about it and on a whim I applied. Seriously I did not NEED this job but I think I wanted something different. So I went through the application process. I had quite a few kinks to work out. I had to get my ancient Macbook working up to snuff. I had to find a way to hardwire my computer to the modem which was inconveniently located in the baby's nursery. It was not there by our choice - the previous owners had used that room for an office. I ended up getting the internet reinstalled in our basement to give me a dedicated teaching space. Again, I did all of this without really knowing why.
A month and a half later, the internet equipment moved, training completed, pretty "classroom" all set up, I opened shop as an ESL teacher in China. My alter ego was born. I waited. It was a slow start getting classes since it was smack in the middle of Chinese New Year. I waited some more. Then it happened. I got my first student. I woke up early (not that early) and turned on my computer. I pulled out my lesson I had prepped the night before, which I have since learned I spent WAY too much time doing but it was my first lesson and I was nervous. I clicked the "Start Class" button and ...
It was magic.
The effect was instantaneous and undeniable.
I am not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. But I had an extra spring in my step after that first class. It.was.fun. FUN.
I had forgotten how teaching could be fun. None of the nonsense. None of the red tape. None of the paperwork. None of the discipline issues. It was fun! I started popping out of bed VOLUNTARILY at 5am. (Its really not that early!) Learning a whole new style of teaching has reenergized my homeschooling. Spending my early morning hours smiling and encouraging the cute, little faces on my screen overflows into my family. I bounce up the steps ready to start the day. Ready to play. Ready to learn. And I get paid.
